5 Things Every Aspiring Nigerian Producer Should Know

Nigeria's beat-making scene is more competitive than ever, with a new generation of producers uploading loops and sample packs daily. Standing out takes more than a good ear — here are five things that matter.
1. Develop a signature sound
The producers who get remembered are the ones whose drums, chords or vocal chops you can recognise within a few seconds. Chase a distinct identity, not just trends.
2. Learn to mix, not just make beats
A great beat that's poorly mixed will always lose to a good beat that's mixed well. Basic mixing knowledge — gain staging, EQ, compression — turns a rough idea into something artists actually want to record over.
3. Understand publishing and beat licensing
Selling a beat isn't the same as selling the song. Know the difference between exclusive rights, non-exclusive leases, and producer royalties before sending a beat out.
4. Get real studio time
Producing entirely inside a laptop only takes you so far. Time spent in a professional studio — watching how engineers treat vocals, how artists respond to a live room, how a final master is prepared — teaches things no tutorial video can.
5. Network like it's part of the job, because it is
Some of the biggest placements in Nigerian music happened because a producer was in the right studio at the right time. Show up, collaborate, and build real relationships with artists and engineers.
